General Framework of 2024 Trip
Our Middle School Big Island trip will include exploring, camping and hiking around the island, as well as staying and working at Kaiwiki - a beautiful, partially forested plot of land in Hilo, owned and cared for by one of our Wild Kids guides, Hayden, and his wife, Kait. The purpose of this trip is personal growth, to build community, and deepen our awareness and appreciation of Hawaiian culture and landscape.
Arrival and Kaiwiki: June 8th-10th
All participants will fly into Hilo and head straight to Kaiwiki to settle in, set up camp and get oriented. At Kaiwiki, the group will have the opportunity to work in Hayden and Kait’s lo’i and plant native plants in the surrounding forested area, hike, explore and play games!
Island Expedition: June 10th-15th
From Kaiwiki, the group will split into two pods. The two pods will head off into different camping expeditions on the island. Both expeditions will include camping, Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Kea, epic hikes and sightseeing!
Return to Kaiwiki & Departure: June 16th-17th
The two pods will return to Kaiwiki on the evening of the 16th and will spend one night as a whole group to share trip highlights, appreciations and one more game of capture the flag before flying home on June 17th.
More detailed itineraries for the pod expeditions including hikes and campsites will be shared at our first parent meeting!
